Paris at Christmastime, I can remember it fondly in my mind. Images spring forth of twinkling lights around the city, dazzling window displays at Galeries Lafayette, melty raclette cheese being scraped onto a baguette at the Tuileries Christmas market, and all the excuses to have sips of mulled wine in between rounds of Champagne and oysters.

If that doesn’t convince you to visit Paris during the holiday season, I don’t know what will. I was lucky enough to spend some time in Paris around Christmas with my parents, and it was the best!

Being able to bring my mom to Paris for the Christmas markets as well as visit the Alsace on a 5-day Christmas market trip was a dream come true. My mom is a Christmas fanatic. She LOVES Christmas.

We used to decorate for Christmas the second Thanksgiving was over- literally. I used to dread finishing Thanksgiving dinner and having to jump right into unpacking holiday boxes and putting up the tree. So when I asked if her and dad wanted to visit the Christmas markets and see Paris at Christmas, she was thrilled!

And it did NOT disappoint.

We visited the Paris Christmas markets, saw the big tree and window displays at Galeries Lafayette, wandered the streets of Paris with its fun and festive atmosphere, and more!

So now I want to share that Paris Christmas magic with you and help you plan your own holiday getaway to Paris! This guide will share the best things to do in Paris during the Christmas season, where to stay (yes that matters!), what to expect weather-wise, and more!

21 Best Things to Do in Paris at Christmas

From the amazing Paris Christmas markets to where to get some seriously delicious winter comfort food, these are the best things to do in Paris at Christmas!

1. Visit La Magie de Noel (AKA the Tuileries Christmas Market).

2025 Dates: November 15, 2025-January 5, 2026 (TBC for 2025).

Best Christmas Markets in Paris - Tuileries with the Christmas pyramid and ferris wheel

While there seemingly is always something going on at the Tuileries Garden in Paris, the Christmas market is definitely unique.

And you honestly can’t miss it! Starting from around mid-November until early January, you’ll be able to wander around the left side of the Tuileries as you’re facing the Louvre and see many stands selling delicious treats, including one that has the most delectable, melty raclette cheese that they scrape onto a baguette.

It’s a thing of beauty. But they also have booths selling Champagne, holiday-themed games, an ice rink, and even the giant ferris wheel where you can get some incredible views over Paris!

Autumn in Paris

My parents and I had a blast walking around, spotting the Christmas pyramid, riding the ferris wheel, and sipping Champagne and mulled wine. Christmas cheer indeed.

This is a great place to go with kids as there are quite a few fun little carnival rides to enjoy and tasty sweet treats.

2. Take in the Flavors of the La Defense Christmas Market.

2025 Dates: November 13-December 28, 2025.

La Defense Christmas Market

Did you know that the largest Christmas market in Paris isn’t the one at the Tuileries, Eiffel Tower, or even in Montmartre?

Nope, it is the one in La Defense. In its defense (haha), it has a lot of space for it as it is at the La Defense Esplanade.

But there are several booths set up selling crafts, mulled wine, traditional foods like tartiflette, and even foods from around the world!

When I visited, I tasted some scrumptious poutine! But if you want to go to a lively sprawling market, then La Defense is a good one for sure!

Does it have the classic Alsatian holiday feel? No, as it is situated by the Grande Arche de la Defense and this area is where Paris shoves most of its skyscrapers. But it is still really cool and fun!

3. Visit Other Paris Christmas Markets.

Here’s the thing, Paris has a lot of Christmas markets. So if you’re visiting anytime from late November through December, you’re bound to run into a few.

So here are other magical Paris holiday markets to explore during your time here:

  • Hotel de Ville Christmas Market (Now moved to Place de la Concorde)
  • Alsatian Christmas Market at Gare de l’Est
  • Notre Dame Christmas Market
  • Eiffel Tower Christmas Market
  • Abbesses Christmas Market in Montmartre
  • Saint-Germain-des-Pres Christmas Market
  • La Villette Christmas Market at Parc de la Villette
  • Saint Michel Christmas Market in the Latin Quarter (at Place Saint Michel)
  • Bonus: Le Noel des Createurs in Versailles (This local Christmas market pairs perfectly with a weekend visit to the Chateau de Versailles as this is only 1 weekend in December)

Now the dates to each of these markets obviously change each year. And some can start closer to the end of November and some start in mid-December. So finding the markets you most want to see and timing your visit for that is key!

There are actually several more markets than these listed, and some are only a couple of days and pop up throughout the season. But here is a good idea just how many markets you can visit during your trip!

Seriously, you could make your entire Paris Christmas trip just about the holiday markets!

4. Visit Galeries Lafayette Haussmann.

Galeries Lafayette Christmas Tree and roof

Yes, we know that Galeries Lafayette has stunning window displays on the outside this time of year, but it is well worth going inside of Galeries Lafayette for a couple of reasons.

The first is the giant tree. Each year, Galeries Lafayette displays a gigantic tree. Not a real Christmas tree, but a decorative one and they look different each year. And each year they’ll also have lights and music.

But aside from that, Galeries Lafayette is super beautiful and made more so by the holiday decor.

But the other big reason to visit is to visit the rooftop. Yes, we know the rooftop is stunning year-round, but at Christmas time in Paris, especially if you go around sunset, you’ll see the Christmas lights below shimmering in the twilight.

Dusk at Galeries Lafayette around the holidays

It’s totally worth a stop here during your November or December visit!

The displays start to go up around early-to-mid November.

5. Go See the Department Store Holiday Displays.

Galeries Lafayette window during Christmas

Yes, I just gushed about Galeries Lafayette, but come on, it’s iconic with its glass domed ceiling year round. Combine it with gorgeous rooftop views and the festive tree and it’s a must-visit all on its own.

But there are plenty of other window displays at department stores around the city to see! And many have beautiful decor inside too!

Some great stores to check out include the Printemps Haussmann, BHV Marais, Le Bon Marché, and the Samaritaine Paris Pont-Neuf.

Definitely head inside the stores to see their holiday decorations and perhaps purchase a fun gift.

The displays start to go up around early-to-mid November.

6. Admire the Christmas Lights Around the City.

Lights at Galeries Lafayette during Christmas in Paris

Yes, you’ll spot many great lights around the city near the department stores, the Champs-Elysees, Place Vendrome, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, Bercy Village, and more!

Also, wherever there are high-end stores like on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, it will be brightly lit and fabulously decorated.

You’ll start seeing these around mid-November.

7. Go on a Bus Tour to See the City Lit Up.

Palais Garnier in Paris with Christmas tree in front

You’re going to want to bundle up for this one! But be sure to sit up top on an open-top bus tour of the Christmas lights around Paris!

The Tootbus does have a comical name, but they have a special Christmastime tour where they take you around to see the lights of the city with an audio commentary that has Christmas songs to get you in the holiday spirit!

Book it here!

8. Or…Visit Light Shows!

Paris does have tons of lights strung up on streets and plenty of window displays to keep you enthralled during the holiday season.

But… They also have fun light displays to check out too! This includes the Jardin des Plantes with its annual light festival, L’Odyssee Lumineuse at the Parc Floral de Paris, and even the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud Lumieres-en-Seine just outside of Paris.

Wander the light fixtures in awe on a crisp evening around the holidays in Paris!

Pro-tip: It’s a good idea to purchase tickets ahead of time!

  • Jardin des Plantes Light Festival: November 19, 2025-January 18, 2026 (TBC for 2025)
  • L’Odyssee Lumineuse: November 19, 2025-January 11, 2026
  • Lumieres-en-Seine: November 14, 2025-January 11, 2026

9. Enjoy a Black Friday Sale and Go Shopping in Paris!

Galeries Lafayette from the street during the holidays

While not as widespread or as extreme as Black Friday in the US (or as extensive as Soldes are in January in Paris and in the summer), there are sales going on around Paris during the holiday season!

So while admiring the window displays and lights, why not pop into the department stores to see if you can find a deal?

Regardless, it is typically cheaper to buy French products in France and just take them home. You can even get your tax refunded on large purchases if you aren’t an EU resident and quality. Just bring your passport and ask for the detaxe form!

This even includes French pharmacy goods! I love picking up skincare items at the French pharmacy each visit, and this could be a great gift for friends and family back home!

Last year, I even purchased my mom a Longchamp bag at a much cheaper price than back home.

Pro-Tip: If you want to purchase some delicious food, definitely go to La Grande Epicerie at Le Bon Marche! This huge store has food from around France and the world, and they have tons of holiday treats to enjoy!

10. Go Ice Skating at the Grand Palais.

From mid-December to early January, you can head to the beautiful glass-roofed Grand Palais to go ice skating at the largest indoor ice rink in all of France!

And at night, there is a lightshow and DJs! This could be a really really fun date idea in Paris around the holidays!

Ice Skating Dates: December 13, 2025-January 7, 2026

11. Enjoy Christmas Concerts Around the City!

Sainte-Chapelle in Paris

Many churches around the city have holiday concerts in Paris, and it is a fabulous chance to enjoy beautiful music in some of the most beautiful churches in the world.

Some iconic ones to check out include Sainte-Chapelle, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, Eglise Saint-Sulpice, Saint-Severin, and now, again at Notre Dame.

Here are the dates/times of the Christmas concerts of these churches:

  • Sainte-Chapelle: December 19-23 and 26-28, 2025 at 6 pm. On December 24 at 12 and 1:30 pm.
  • Saint-Germain-des-Pres: December 20, 23, 26, and 27 at 8:30 pm
  • Eglise Saint-Sulpice: December 20, 2025 at 8:45 pm
  • Saint-Severin: December 25, 2025 at 8:30 pm
  • Notre Dame: December 16, 2025 at 8:30 pm. There is another concert called Sankta Lucia Noel Suedois on December 2, 2025 at 8:30 pm.

But tickets go quickly so be sure to book as soon as you can!

12. Visit the Covered Passages Around the Holidays.

Galerie Vivienne
Gorgeous year-round…but think of this at Paris at Christmastime!

If you know Paris, you’ll know that it is full of covered passages. There are several around the city with unique coffee shops or boutiques, delightful restaurants, and more.

So it makes sense that these places would be even more charming to wander them with their twinkling lights and beautiful shops! Some fun covered passages to check out during the Christmas season in Paris include:

  • Galerie Vivienne (Probably the most popular and most decorated)
  • Passage Jouffroy
  • Passage Verdeau
  • Passage des Panoramas

13. Admire the Nativity Scenes at Paris Churches.

Nativity scene at the Strasbourg Cathedral

Pretty much every church around France (and the world) has a nativity scene set up around the holiday season.

I’ve seen churches in Strasbourg, Obernai, etc., have nativity scenes on display. It makes sense- it’s kind of the whole point!

So you can admire the various nativity scenes around the churches in Paris including Notre Dame, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, the Sacre-Coeur, Saint-Suplice, and more!

14. Head to Christmas Mass in Paris.

Kat and her parents smiling with Notre Dame in the background

Are you going to be here for the actual Christmas holiday? Then, you may want to partake in mass in Paris. Enjoy the music, singing, and more as you enjoy a special moment in one of Paris’s most beautiful churches.

Churches around Paris will have both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, with Notre Dame having many.

Check here for more information on Christmas masses and nativity scenes

15. Take a Cruise to See Paris’s Christmas Lights at Night.

I think the best time to take a Paris cruise would have to be the holiday season. I mean, for starters, the sun sets earlier, making it easier to enjoy the lights of Paris.

But thanks to all the holiday lights, it is a stunning time to catch it from the water!

So book a Seine river cruise to enjoy the lights of Paris as the lights sparkle!

Book it here!

16. Visit the Musee des Arts Forains (AKA the Museum of Fairground Arts).

Museum of Fairground Arts tour

Are you visiting after Christmas in Paris? Then this is a hidden gem you’re going to want to enjoy!

Arguably one of the best smaller museums in Paris is the Museum of Fairground Arts. It has old fairground rides, games, and decor from the 19th and 20th centuries. And you can even ride the Merry Go Rounds, play the games, and dance to the music from an old music box.

It is such a fun museum to visit for people of all ages. However, most of the year you have to go with a tour. And most of the time, tours are only in French and if you don’t speak French you get a brochure to explain the museum.

Now it’s great if you’re learning French! I went on the tour and had a great time!

However…from December 26 to the end of the Christmas holidays, they open the museum to the public to enjoy without a tour during their Festival du Merveilleux.

And you’re going to want to visit to enjoy this incredible museum full of fun antique rides and games!

17. Find the Best Hot Chocolate in Paris.

Hot chocolate at Les Deux Magots

It’s official: Paris has the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had! And wintertime is honestly the best time to enjoy this indulgent beverage as you warm up on a cold day.

Yes, many markets do sell hot chocolate, but there are places around Paris selling some really good cups.

I plan to write a whole guide to hot chocolate in Paris (hopefully next year) as I have a whopping 8 different places I want to check out on top of the big ones I’ve already tried in Paris.

Out of the 4 big places (Carette, Angelina, Cafe de Flore, and Les Deux Magots) that I’ve already tried, I LOVE Les Deux Magots.

Yes, it is touristy. But this place still makes the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had. It’s also got some incredible drip coffee so if you’re coming for breakfast get that too.

But it is on a lovely corner, perfect for people watching in Saint-Germain-des-Pres, and it’s also across from the Saint-Germain-des-Pres Abbey, a church that is mentioned many times in this post!

After Les Deux Magots, I also enjoy Carette. Yes, it’s busier than ever, but the hot chocolate is that good. Go to the Place des Vosges location though!

18. Eat ALL the Cheesy, Gooey Winter Comfort Foods

Fondue at Le Refuge des Fondus

One thing (of many) that I loved about living in Grenoble, was the fact that hearty alpine food was right at my fingertips. Kind of easy to see why I gained a bit of weight there.

But in all seriousness, winter in Paris, and especially the holidays in Paris make it a great excuse to indulge a little on cheesy, ooey gooey, delightful foods.

And France does melted cheese like no other (except maybe Switzerland). And thankfully in a city like Paris, you don’t have to hop on a train to the Alps to get it.

Some foods to try include fondue savoyarde, tartiflette (kind of like scalloped potatoes with lardons and onions), and even raclette (cheese that is melted and poured onto bread, potatoes, etc.).

And the best part is during the holiday season you can even find some of these around the Christmas markets!

But restaurants to enjoy with these options include Le Vieux Bistro (my favorite), Pain Vin Fromages, Le Chatlet Savoyard, La Taverne de Montmartre, and Le Refuges des Fondus (although this one is a bit gimmicky with the wine in baby bottles- but it was fun!).

19. Taste Christmas Treats in Paris.

Champagne at the Tuileries Christmas Market in Paris

Want to eat like a Parisian at Christmas? Well, it definitely isn’t the same as it is here in the US!

But while you’re here, you should check out what they have to eat and enjoy it for yourself! You can find many of these items at Christmas markets around Paris as well as at grocery stores.

Here are Christmas foods that are common in France (and Paris):

  • Bouche de Noel (a delightful Christmas cake shaped like a log)
  • Oysters (best with Champagne)
  • Foie Gras
  • Cheese
  • Escargots
  • Caviar (yes, they’re so fancy)

Now the main meat dish, appetizers, and more will vary based on the region in France and preferences of the people. But these are popular things to try around Christmas.

Raclette on a baguette at the Tuileries Christmas market

Now if you’re coming to the Christmas markets, here are some delicious things to enjoy that Parisians also love (aside from what I mentioned for Christmas dinner above):

  • Raclette and tartiflette (I’ve mentioned it a ton but yes, it is popular)
  • Roasted chestnuts (Châtaignes grillées)
  • Crepes
  • Pain d’Epices (This is an Alsatian spiced bread kind of like gingerbread in bread form)
  • Bretzels (These are large pretzels and so good)
  • Vin Chaud (Mulled wine and a must at the Christmas markets)

20. Visit Disneyland Paris.

Visiting Paris at Christmas with kids? Or just love Disneyland? Then head to Disneyland Paris to see the lights, displays, and decorations during the holiday season starting in November through early January!

You can also enjoy the Mickey’s Dazzling Christmas Parade!, holiday musical show, and the Christmas tree lighting, making it a fun place to be for the whole family!

Dates: November 8, 2025-January 6, 2026.

21. Take a Christmas-Themed Day Trip From Paris.

Colmar Christmas Markets | Best Alsace Christmas Markets

While Paris is magical around the holiday season, there are many places in France that are also perfect around Christmas.

So if you’ve got a spare day and want to visit another place, here are some great day trip ideas around the holidays:

  • Strasbourg: Visit the Capital of Christmas itself on a day trip as it is only about 1 hour and 45 minutes away from the Paris Gare de l’Est train station on the TGV (the high speed train).
  • Metz: Less than 1.5 hours from Paris Gare de l’Est via the TGV is Metz, a place with another great Christmas market.
  • Lille: Head to Northern France for this Christmas market, which is only just over an hour on the TGV from Paris Gare du Nord. Plus, enjoy this beautiful town with a Belgian feel as it is super close to the Belgian border.
  • Reims: Want to pick up your own bottle of bubbly to celebrate Christmas? Then head straight to the source in Reims. Visit large Champagne houses and their historic cellars like Taittinger, Ruinart, and Veuve and visit the Reims Christmas market. When I was in Reims last year, they had already started setting up holiday lights in late October! This is only about 40 minutes from Paris via the TGV out of Gare de l’Est.
  • Rouen: Explore the delights of a Norman Christmas market at Rouen, which is only about 1 and 40 minutes from Paris on the train from Saint-Lazare.
  • Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte: If you happen to have a car (or you can go via public transit), then this is a great place to visit during the holiday season. This chateau has its Grand Noel with a big projection on the castle, fun activities, the chance to roast marshmallows, and you get to walk around in a red cape to make it all the more festive! You need to reserve tickets in advance for this and it goes from November 14, 2025-January 4, 2026.

Best Place to Stay in Paris at Christmas

View from Hotel Atmospheres

I have a whole in-depth guide on where to stay in Paris based on your travel style where I discuss all kinds of places to stay in Paris and hotels.

And in that guide, I even discuss the best place to stay for the holidays: Opera in the 9th arrondissement.

Why? Well, this is not only where the iconic Palais Garnier is located (totally recommend going inside by the way!), but there are phenomenal restaurants, great shopping, and amazing holiday decor and lights.

That is because Galeries Lafayette and Printemps are here! There is so much to see and do in the area that staying here makes it totally worth it during the holiday season! As an added bonus, you’re close to the Tuileries to walk down and enjoy that market!

Here are hotels in the 9th arrondissement in Opera:

Hotel Saint-Marc: Okay, this is technically in the 2nd arrondissement but it is literally steps from the 9th. This is a cute tucked away hotel with its own courtyard and the rooms here are so cute and my room had a fantastic bathroom. Plus, they have a spa and hammam you can use during your stay. I’ve stayed here before and it is an incredible spot.

Book it here!

Hotel pool at Hotel Saint-Marc

Monsieur Helder Hotel Opera: Located in the heart of the Opera neighborhood, this place has cozy rooms that overlook the street or courtyard. It is also less than 10 minutes from Galeries Lafayette and the Palais Garnier!

Book it here!

Intercontinental Paris Le Grand: If you’re here for the holidays and looking to splurge, this is the place. This 5-star hotel has everything you need including a lounge, spa, gorgeous rooms, some iconic restaurants, and more! Some rooms even have views of the Palais Garnier! And they even have stunning decor for the holiday.

Book it here!

For other great spots, I also recommend potentially staying near Saint-Germain-des-Pres or the Latin Quarter for their many holiday festivities and fun! During our Paris Christmas trip, we stayed at Hotel Atmospheres in the Latin Quarter and it was so cozy and cute. I’ve actually stayed here a couple of times with my parents and in-laws as they have walk-in showers and large elevators to accommodate people with mobility issues. I highly recommend it!

Paris at Christmas Weather

How cute are my parents at the Tuileries Christmas market in Paris?

We’ve got to talk about visiting Paris in November and December and what kind of weather to expect. Here is the thing, Paris isn’t a place that gets a lot of snow, or much snow at all really.

They had a brief snowstorm last year and it was rare and crazy! But Paris does get chilly, and it is overcast and rainy at times in the winter.

But here is an overview of Paris weather in November and December so you can be prepared:

  • November Weather: Average temperature is 52ºF (11ºC) during the day and 43ºF (6ºC) at night. It rains on average 7 days during the month. Daylight is around 9 hours. Sunrise is around 8 am and sunset is around 5:12 pm. That is in the middle of the month, so by the end, expect it closer to December weather and daylight.
  • December Weather: Average temperature is 47ºF (8ºC) during the day and 39ºF (4ºC) at night. It rains on average about 9 days during the month. Daylight is around 8 hours. Sunrise is around 8:38 am and sunset is around 4:55 pm in the middle of the month.

In short, days are shorter and chillier than other times of year, which is obviously expected.

I’d be sure to pack a sturdy umbrella just in case of rain or perhaps snow this time of year.

What to Wear in Paris During the Holidays

Kat and the La Defense Christmas Market

I actually have a full guide on packing for Europe in winter in just a carry on from my other blog, World Wide Honeymoon.

But here is a brief discussion on what to bring.

In short, layers and warmer clothes. I recommend wearing wool socks and waterproof boots, jeans/trousers, and cute sweaters or maybe cute mockneck shirts

I also recommend a The NorthFace puffy coat, but a wool coat is nice too! I also had a scarf, gloves, and ear muffs to stay warm, especially after the sun went down.

My husband typically wears leather dressier boots, wool socks, jeans, and sweaters to wear over tshirts. He also takes a wool coat, gloves, scarf, and ear muffs too.

Now I did pack tights and you could pack wool under layers to stay warm on really chilly days, but when we went it really wasn’t that cold to where I needed extra layers under my jeans. But you do what you feel most comfortable with and dress for what your cold tolerance is.

I live in Cleveland, Ohio where winters are long, cold, and snowy so temperatures that didn’t even sink below freezing didn’t make me feel very cold with what I already had on.

When to Visit Paris Around Christmastime

Paris window displays for the holidays

I know this sounds like a dumb thing to talk about… you’d visit at Christmas right?

But unless you want to visit Christmas mass, many places are shut down on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day.

And it can get super crowded as you get closer to Christmas.

You can reasonably visit at the end of November and still get the same feel and experience a lot of what Paris has to offer this time of year before the crowds roll in!

In fact, that is exactly what we did when we visited! We came at the end of November and then went to the Alsace Christmas markets afterward as December rolled around.

So late November and early December are great times to visit to avoid the most amount of crowds.

However, there are some Christmas markets, concerts, events, etc., that don’t start until early to mid December and later. So you’ll have to figure out what exactly you want to see and do and time your visit for those dates.

Is Christmas a Good Time to Visit Paris? Is It Worth It?

Christmas Pyramid at the Tuileries

I love Paris any time of the year honestly. And after having visited almost every single month of the year in Paris, I can say there really isn’t a bad time.

And something about the holiday season in Paris really makes the city come to life with festive cheer.

There is a magical air about it that makes it so fun, charming, and incredibly cozy. I cannot recommend visiting Paris around the holidays enough to enjoy the Christmas markets, lights, food, and more during this time!

While Christmas Day itself may be a little tricky, you can certainly still have a lovely day wandering around, enjoying the lights, having a Christmas dinner, and enjoying many of the festivities well into the New Year!

I hope this helps you plan out your Paris Christmas trip between all the amazing things to do in Paris during the holidays, Christmas markets, where to stay, and more!
